make do {and make lovely} monday-the originals

Before there was Pinterest there was Ethelee and Tom Beverly. They are my grandparents and they are the originals.

Exhibit A: The plastic cutlery cans.
We pull these out for eating on the porch, grill-outs and picnics. My grandmother made these about two decades ago. She drew the shape of one style of cutlery on the side of each can so there would be no confusion about which can held spoons and which held forks and to this day I have never pulled a spoon out of the knife can. I cannot say the same for the cutlery drawer at my house.

Exibit B: The pillows made from quilt squares.
My grandmother is the queen of thrift. She has made pillows out of everything; napkins, tea towels and a pre-printed quilt topper that she chopped up.

These are just a few of the MANY creative, thrifty and original solutions my Maw has come up with over the years.

Exhibit C: Paw.
This is Paw, he has just risen from his swing and crossed the porch to deliver Maw a note he has just written. He wrote the note while we were all talking about how weird it is to text someone who is in the same room.

This is Maw reading the note. And getting the joke.
We all laughed so hard we cried.

These people know how to have fun. Without text, without pinterest, without wireless.
With each other, with what they have, with joy.

This weekend, as a mother's day treat, I was able to go to visit my grandparents by myself, sans kids and spouse. Running away to my grandparents house alone is about the most wonderful thing in the world to me. Easy to see why I love going there so much isn't it?

  1. This reminds me so much of visits with my grandparents. They are such a treasure. So glad you were able to get away and get good laughs!

  2. They are so cute! I wish I had grandparents that I could run away to like that!
    Enjoy them!

  3. They seem like such wonderful people!! You are truly blessed!! Such great photos!! Have a great day! xo Heather
