my retirement plan

I love vintage "cupcake" campers or Caravans as they are called in the UK.
Right now I am in the Pop-Up Camper phase b/c I am camping with the boys.
But someday, when the kids are grown and gone I would love a little bit pull-behind camper that I could take on Flea Market exploration road trips and all-girl getaways to the beach.
Wouldn't that be great?

But Caravan's are not just great for camping - they are also great for:

As Art

For selling Cupcakes

For a European Vacation

and as a doorstop

See, they are completely practical and useful in every way.
A good plan don't you think?

This is what I am reading right now (or at least what is on my night stand waiting to be read...)

Venetia Kelly's Traveling Show: A Novel  (stay tuned for a giveaway coming soon!)
The Miracles of Santo Fico: A Novel (on loan from my Grandmother's church library)
The Postmistress (overdue, darn new releases!)
Velva Jean Learns to Drive: A Novel  (on loan from Kim who never fails)
Embroidered Treasures for Children (which I bought at the Dollar Tree of all places!)

So far I have made it thru The Postmistress (which I highly recommend) and I am loving the eyecandy and inspiration in Embroidered Treasures (can you believe I got it for a $1? Love a deal!!)

How cute are these little slippers?

And these dollies are precious!

And there is a whole crew of pirates I may just have to bring to life for Miles this Christmas.
I mean how can you resist that face??

I am anxious to get started on the rest of the books, but with school having just started and 2 birthday parties I am trying not to feel too guilty about neglecting my pile.
It's just sometimes I don't want to start a good book till I know I will really be able to enjoy it.
It's like saving the best bite of pie for last. I don't want to rush and miss it.
Anybody else feel this way?

Frugal Fashion

This is what I wore today.

$1 necklace from Junk Shop
$3 tank from Wal-Mart
$4 Summer Clearance Cardi from Wal-Mart

$4 skirt from Savers, embellished with vintage crochet lace pieces
(to cover stains I made myself but couldn't get out!)

$10 Flip Flops from Dollar General (what a splurge!!)

Total look: $22

Wonder what Rachel Zoe would think?
She probably would not think it was "bannana's" but she might like the crochet detail.

First Day

This week was our first week back to school.
I know, I know.
But we go to a great school. A school we adore, and if it means we only get 5 weeks for summer, well it is worth it. And the kids agree.

Last year I had a part-time job at the school.
This year I have a full-time job and a lot more official responsibilties.

So to say that this week was a little busy and hectic is an understatement.
So forgive me, but these are actually the 5th Day of School pictures this year, instead of the first.

Here is the Retrospective.
My sweet, sweet boys.

And here are this years pictures. Which they would not stand still for.

What hams.
I cannot believe who much they have grown. Especially Wylie.
Adolescence is just around the corner. I better eat my Wheaties.

stichin story

(princess's pea pod bed)

on my wee summer break I got the chance to spend a few days sitting still and doing not a whole lot of anything at my mother's and my grandmother's house.

(cozy couch)
I find that sometimes it is easier for me to relax if my hands have something to keep them busy. Also I find that it helps - at family gatherings especially - that if my hands are busy my mouth stays shut, which is usually - with family - the best plan.

(table for 2)

I leave the "debating" to the young and the old. I like to just sit curled up in the corner of the couch and stitch, with all my family buzzing about me, drinking my coffee, enjoying just being in the middle of it.

falling in love with John Adams

Well, really I feel in-love with the Miniseries John Adams from HBO
I am such a nerd.
Did you know that my degree is actually in history?
And yes, the boxed set is going on my Birthday Wish List.
And truth be told, my true love is Jefferson.
See, what did I tell you? Complete nerd.

this weekend was like any other summer weekend in that it was hot, hot, hot.
it was like any other summer weekend in that we are all various amounts of lazy. knocked out of routines by time off from school and work and the oppressive humidity forcing everyone indoors.

this weekend was like any other summer weekend in that life came and went as it always does.
sometimes nipping at our heels a little more than others.

this weekend was perhaps a little altered from every other summer weekend in that it held moments of time that will never be forgotten.

while at my parents, with my sister visiting, we began to roll out our desire and intent to adopt a sibling group out of foster care in 2011-2012. we go to our first C.A.L.L. meeting in August.

while at my parents I recieved one of those phone calls you never want to get. one in which I found out that a friends husband had died suddenly, tragically.

while at my parents I talked to another friend whose marriage and family hang in the balance.
nothing simple or easy there.

it did not escape me as I moved forward through the day, surround by my family, how daily-ness is absolutely necessary.
it is our tether.

setting the table.
filling the glasses.
passing the watermelon.
life and death and the in-between of our own making all hanging out together on a hot summer day.
